Open Water Swimming Classes This Month At Coosan Point

Have you ever wanted to try Open Water Swimming?

Following on from the enormous demand for open water swimming classes on the wonderful waters of Lough Owel, Swim Ireland has confirmed it will now be hosting classes to help people get more confident in the water in the Athlone area.

Starting on July 15 until mid-August, specially trained instructors will work with small groups with a wide range of ability and confidence in the water.

The classes are all adults only and last for 45 minutes.

A total of two classes are being offered in Coosan Point starting in July.

Open Water Adults – Improvers

The Level 2 programmes are suited to swimmers who can swim 25m in a swimming pool and have the ability to float on their back..

When: Tuesdays – 15 July 2025 to 19 Aug 2025

Time: 7.00pm – 7.45pm

Age restrictions: Over 18 years

Open Water Adults – Advanced – Coosan Point

The Level 3 Programmes are suited for swimmers who are confident out of their depth, have the ability to tread water, and can swim at least 100m on front or back unaided in the open water.

When: Tuesdays – 15 July 2025 to 19 August 2025

Age restrictions: Over 18 years

Time: 7.45pm – 8.30pm

What you will need

Goggles suitable for open water swimming

A bright yellow, orange, pink or green silicone swimming hat

Tow-float

Extra layers to keep warm afterwards

Any other equipment or clothing you normally use for open water

Changing robe to make it easier to get changed

Waterproof bag or plastic bag to keep things dry on shore
