
There’s never been a better time to get on a bike! Bike Week 2025 will run from Saturday, May 10th to Sunday, May 18th. It’s easy, fun and there’s something for everyone.
Enjoy a wide range of events from community and school cycles, fun bike festivals, safety workshops and much more.
Here in Westmeath there are a wide range of events planned for the week with something suitable for everyone to get involved with.
2025 events
Saturday May 10

Activity: Hop On Your Bike
Where: Maryland GAA Pitch, Drumraney, Athlone
Time: 9am – 2.30pm
Description: Children will be taught about safety on bikes on the road, the importance of using safety equipment such as hi-vis jackets and cycling safely and responsibly. The coaches will show the children skills on the day and will hold a mini cycling event at the club.
Sunday May 11

Activity: Bikers On The Move
Where: Milltown GAA, Rathconrath
Time: 12pm – 4.00pm
Description:
The starting point is Milltown GAA Grounds and riders will tackle a scenic 15km loop through Rathconrath and surrounding countryside
Key Stops:
Rathconrath Village – Water and snack break
Historic Landmark Stop – Brief talk on local history
Family Fun Stop (Halfway Point) – Short games and stretching exercises
Return to Milltown GAA Grounds
Event Activities:
Pre-Ride Safety Check & Workshop – Tips on bike maintenance and road safety
Family-Friendly Short Route (5km) – For younger or beginner cyclists
Cycling Skills Challenge – Fun obstacle course at the GAA grounds.
Monday May 12

Activity: Pedal Power Week
Where: Taghmon National School
Time: During School Hours
Description: Asking children to cycle every day to school including a “bling your bike” day. Local sports coach coming to school to organise cycling routes and courses around school yard and grounds. All classes to create a pedal power project as homework for the week.

Activity: Cycle for fun
Where: St Hilda’s Special School
Time: During School Hours
Description: The pupils will explore scooters this year alongside tricycles. Road safety promotion and encouraging pupils to feel the benefit of cycling for their own personal wellbeing and for benefit of fun.

Activity: Bike Week 2025

Description: Bike Safety Check Lesson; Plans / Visit from our local Community Gardai on Road Safety;
Bike Themed Treasure Hunts/ Relay Races; Cycling Awareness Survey; Bicycle Themed Worksheets ;Art Activities; Cycle on Greenway.

Activity: Cycle through the Countryside
Where: Coralstown National School
Time: During School Hours
Description: To encourage children to cycle safely from their homes to visit friends, clubs and school. To make the most of the Greenway which is close by our school.

Activity: Bike Week at Columba College Killucan
Where: Columba College Killucan
Time: During School Hours
Description: Raise awareness of road safety for local students who cycle to school which will include a slow bike race and an RSA talk.

Activity: Bike Week at Scoil Eoin Naofa, Ballymore
Where: Scoil Eoin Naofa, Ballymore
Time: During School Hours
Description: Cycling from the school down to the lake. Work shop back at the school with the Men’s Shed showing us how to put a chain back on a bike, pump a wheel and fix a tube.

Activity: National School Zwift Challenge
Where: Dean Kelly National School
Time: During School Hours
Description: Students in the junior classes (2nd, 3rd, 4th) will cycle laps of the school yard, each student will aim to complete a kilometre daily.
Senior classes (5th & 6th) will use an exercise bike and the ZWift app to complete challenges. Students will be encouraged to cycle to school each day Mon – Fri during the week.

Activity: New to cycling
Where: St. Michael’s NS, Castletown Geoghegan.
Time: During School Hours
Description: Between 12th and 16th May St. Michael’s NS Westmeath will hold a ‘New to Cycling (triathlon)’ and a variety of bike related activities such as write a poem, bike art work, scoot or cycle to school, family cycle on wellbeing Wednesday, prize giving for great participation, send in photos of your spending time on your bike

Activity: Bike Safety Talk and Blueway trek
Where: Emper National School

Description: Bike safety talk and cycle on local blueway to Abbeyshrule – parents welcome!
Wednesday May 14

Activity: Bike Week 2025
Where: Dalystown National School

Description: Promote the benefits of cycling while ensuring that the pupils understand and adhere to the principles of Cycling Safety.

Activity: Cycle to Moate
Where: Our Lady’s Bower, Athlone
Time: During School Hours
Description: TY students will cycle along the Greenway from Athlone to Moate and back.
Thursday May 15

Activity: Ag Rothaíocht Lena Chairde
Where: Gaelscoil an Choilin, Mullingar
Time: During School Hours
Description: Encourage students, parents, and the local community to embrace cycling as a fun, healthy, and environmentally friendly mode of transport. The event will include a safe and scenic cycling route, as well as engaging activities to promote cycling awareness and road safety.

Activity: Leisure Cycle For All with Lakeside Wheelers Cycling Club
Where: Greenway Car Park, Clonmore, Mullingar
Time: 6.30pm
Description: Fun cycle event for all ages – with 10k and 20k options with Coffee Trailer at end of event with free coffee/tea for all.
Friday May 16

Activity: Brosna Bike Race
Where: Child’s Play, Kilbeggan
Time: 11.00am – 12.00pm
Description: Preschool children will be encouraged to bike to school. A second bike race will take place along the Brosna View Green.
Sunday May 18

Activity: Athlone Tri Club – New to Cycling
Where: Athlone Regional Sports Centre
Time: 10.00am – 1.00pm
Description: New to cycling (triathlon) will include coached demonstration of basic skills & principles for cyclist, coaching exercises followed by a group cycle on the greenway (approx. 10km).
Bike Week In June

Activity: Bike Week at Scoil Aodha Naofa, Rahugh
Where: Old Wood Road Circuit, Rahugh, Kilbeggan
Time: June 06, 3.00pm – 4.30pm
Description: To encourage pupils and their parents to use their bikes as a regular form of transport and to develop safety awareness when using bikes on the roads.
