SUMMARY:Westmeath Bike Week Events 2024
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to confirm that we will once again be supporting dozens of events across Co. Westmeath as part of Bike Week in May 2024. \n\n\n\nThe week-long celebration of all things cycling takes place again this year\, between Saturday May 11 and Sunday May 19th. \n\n\n\nSchools\, clubs\, community groups and organisations\, as well as local businesses are being supported to organise their own FREE Bike Week event during Bike Week 2024 in Co. Westmeath. \n\n\n\nA total of 26 events will take place all across Co. Westmeath including social cycles\, cycle maintenance/safety workshops in schools and club activities. \n\n\n\nSaturday May 11\n\n\n\nCYCLE SAFELY WITH SCOUTS \n\n\n\nWe plan to hire bikes from OE Bike Hire in Mullingar and cycle alone the Old Rail Trail to Ballinea Bridge\, take a break there and return to Mullingar. Total distance is 8km. \n\n\n\nPrior to the event\, we plan to hold cycle talks and demos with our scouts so they are familiar with how to cycle safely. \n\n\n\nTime:  10.00am \n\n\n\nLocation:  Old Trail Rail route in Mullingar \n\n\n\nSuitability: All scout members\, aged 6 to 15 years \n\n\n\nDate:  Saturday 11th May 2024 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSCHOOL BIKE WEEK \n\n\n\nAt our school\, we’re excited to introduce an engaging outdoor cycling activity for our students. We’ll be transforming the tarmac area into an obstacle course where children can learn essential cycling skills and navigation techniques. Our goal is to gradually build their confidence and competence\, leading to small group excursions along the cycle path on the Ardmore Road. \n\n\n\nTime:  9.30 am \n\n\n\nDate:  11th May to 19th May 2024 \n\n\n\nLocation:  Holy Family Primary School Mullingar \n\n\n\nSuitability: Pupils \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCREMIN’S NS DUATHLON \n\n\n\nOur school started a ‘Run Club’ every Tuesday lunchtime this year where teachers and pupils go running in groups in our village. This group is now developing in a cycling club where pupils will bring bikes to school and cycle on the Astro Turf pitch at break time. The culmination of this work will see a duathlon event on Saturday 18th May where all the children will take part in an organised event at Lough Derravaragh holiday park. \n\n\n\nTime:  10.30am \n\n\n\nDate:  Sunday 11th – Saturday 18th May \n\n\n\nLocation:  Lough Derravaragh Holiday Park (To be confirmed) \n\n\n\nSuitability: Children 3rd to 6th classes \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSt. Michael’s NS BIKE WEEK FOR THE ENVIRONMENT \n\n\n\nCycle or scoot to school using bike and scooter stands  to store bikes and scooters \n\n\n\nWriting competition in relation to the benefits of cycling and how it benefits the environment \n\n\n\nArt based lessons on cycling/bicycles \n\n\n\nRoad Safety and cycle safely in SPHE \n\n\n\nAcrostic poetry based on the word BICYCLE 🚲 \n\n\n\nHistory lessons based around different types of bicycles around the world past and present \n\n\n\nTime:  9am \n\n\n\nDate:  Throughout Bike Week \n\n\n\nLocation:  At the school and within the village \n\n\n\nSuitability: Children and their families \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday May 12\n\n\n\nCÀMAN N CYCLE 5k Cycle \n\n\n\nTime:  11am \n\n\n\nDate:  Sunday 12th May 2024 \n\n\n\nLocation:  Ringtown GAA \n\n\n\nSuitability: Yes open to all families\, adults and children \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMILLTOWN 5 MILE SPIN \n\n\n\nThe central focal point will be the community centre in Milltown Rathconrath (eircode N91VA06). There will be a set time of departure for all cyclists\, with safety ‘outrider’ cyclists accompanying groups to ensure safe passage along the route.  \n\n\n\nThe route is on local access roads\, avoiding main regional roads and will be marked in advance with signage warning other road users in the area that a community cycle is commencing. After the cycle\, there will be light refreshments served in the community centre building and facilities for people to change clothing if it is a wet day. \n\n\n\nTime:  3pm \n\n\n\nDate:  Sunday 12th May 2024 \n\n\n\n Location:  Milltown Community Hub\, Rathconrath\, N91VA06 \n\n\n\n Suitability: Children over the age of 8 can attend as 5 mile route might be difficult for younger children. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday May 13\n\n\n\nC2S – CYCLE TO SCHOOL \n\n\n\nCycle to school each day of bike week\, cycle along canal (weather permitting)\, bike maintenance. \n\n\n\nTime:  9am \n\n\n\nDate:  Beginning Monday May 13th\, with big emphasis on cycling on Friday 17th May. \n\n\n\nLocation:  Coralstown National School \n\n\n\nSuitability: Pupils of Coralstown National School \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBICYCLE MAINTENANCE WORKSHOP AND SAFETY TALKS \n\n\n\nHands on experience fixing puncture and minding bike by specials in bike repair and servicing. Safety talk on rules of the road etc. possibly by local Gardai. \n\n\n\nTime:  10.00am \n\n\n\nDate:  During Bike Week \n\n\n\nLocation:  Ardnagrath N.S \n\n\n\nSuitability: Children \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCYCLING SKILLS COURSE FOR PUPILS WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS. \n\n\n\nWe have a school court where we propose creating an obstacle course for the children to learn how to cycle and navigate through.  Pupils will use their specialised 3-wheel bikes to participate. \n\n\n\nTime:  9.30am \n\n\n\nDate:  Monday 13th May 2024 \n\n\n\nLocation:  St. Hilda’s Special School \n\n\n\nSuitability: Pupils from Senior classes\, 12-18 years old. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCOLUMBA COLLEGE KILUCAN  BIKE WEEK \n\n\n\nThe RSA will come speak to all pupils about road safety and cycling safety. \n\n\n\nWe will also run various activities such as a slow bicycle race\, Bike and spoon race and hopefully a raffle with prizes revilement to Bike week \n\n\n\nTime:  1:20pm – 2pm Lunch Time \n\n\n\nDate:  Monday 13th – Friday 17th of May \n\n\n\nLocation:  Columba college Kilucan Co. Westmeath \n\n\n\nSuitability: Students and Teachers \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTYS TAKE THE TRAIL \n\n\n\nOur route starts on the banks of the Royal Canal where we will join up with the Old Rail Trail at Newbrook and Cycle towards Castletown\, Streamstown\, Moate\, Athlone. \n\n\n\nIn preparation for this\, our students will have to create a Strava account for their teacher to view. Rathowen COW CYCLE ON WEDNESDAY \n\n\n\nChildren from Junior infants to 2nd class will cycle around the school yard and the school carpark. Teachers will mark out a route. Children from 3rd to 6th class will cycle along the N4 and down a local lane covering approximately a 5k distance. Teachers and parents will be welcome to complete this cycle also. \n\n\n\nTime:  9.20am \n\n\n\nDate:  Wednesday 15th of May \n\n\n\nLocation:  In the school and school carpark and also along the N4 and Loughlinstown Lane\, Rathowen. \n\n\n\nSuitability: Children\, parents\, teachers and SNAs \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRAHARNEY BLUE BIKER’S \n\n\n\nWe are going to do a cycle around Raharney village with all children in our local school and with locals that are free on the day. Starting at the pavilion (community centre) we will do the slow bike race. And involve the much younger children 5/6yrs old to take part in a race. We will have a decorate a bike competition. And (weather permitting) we will do a bike wash. The community Gardai will call out for chat and join in on the fun. \n\n\n\nTime:  10:30am \n\n\n\nDate:  15th\, 16th\, 17th of May 2024 \n\n\n\nLocation:  Raharney pavilion \n\n\n\nSuitability: Everyone there no age limit on having fun it’s opened to everyone \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSUPERHERO CYCLE DAY \n\n\n\nA superhero dress up day where pupils come to school with their scooters/bikes dressed as their favourite superhero. We will invite a local bike expert to talk about how to look after their bikes and about bike and road safety. Pupils will be brought on a cycling trip along the Blueway to Abbeyshrule and back…with light refreshments on their return. Pupils will receive bike safety accessories to celebrate Bike Week. \n\n\n\nTime:  9.30am until 3.10pm \n\n\n\nDate:  Wednesday 15th May 2024 \n\n\n\nLocation:  Emper NS \n\n\n\nSuitability: Pupils\, teachers\, parents. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBIKE SAFETY AWARENESS \n\n\n\nBike to school (for those it’s possible)\, bike colouring competition\, safety talk \n\n\n\nTime:  During school time \n\n\n\nDate:  Wednesday 15th – 16th May 2024 \n\n\n\nLocation:  Dysart NS \n\n\n\nSuitability: Children in our school \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGREENWAY CYCLE ATHLONE TO MOATE RETURN JOURNEY \n\n\n\nMembers and staff of RehabCare will be cycling from Athlone to Moate and back\, we will be encouraging friends\, family and members of the community to join us for for the full journey or they can link in along the route at their leisure. At Dun Na Si\, families with their children from IWA Sunshine club\, staff\, and volunteers will bring their bikes to explore the park together. \n\n\n\nWe will arrange lunch to celebrate the end of Bike Week\, along with entertainment. \n\n\n\nMoreover\, staff members aim to cycle to work whenever possible\, while our service users will engage in daily exercise sessions using the THERA-Trainer\, this exercise bike is specifically designed for individuals with disabilities. \n\n\n\nTime:  10.30am – 3pm \n\n\n\nDate:  Saturday 18th May 2024 \n\n\n\nLocation:  Dun Na Si Park\, Moate Co.
