Westmeath Sports Partnership in collaboration with Westmeath County Council and Irish Orienteering Association has mapped out two locations in Westmeath, Mullingar Town Park and Athlone Regional Sports Centre Fitness park. All courses are completed through the MapRun6 App.
With thanks to Irish Orienteering Association, these two maps mentioned above have permanent virtual maps that can be accessed by downloading MapRun6 App. Its very easy to access. Follow the steps on the poster.
Orienteering is a sport that combines walking and running with navigation. It’s an inclusive sport that everyone can participate in, open to families, individuals, schools and clubs etc. It helps improve participants navigation, communication and social skills.
Orienteering courses are completed by finding your way from control point to control point in as little time as possible. Each point will be marked on the map with a number. Each course starts with a start point, you must pass through a series of control points you must find in order of number and a finish point you must pass through.
What is MapRun6
MapRun6 is an android/iOS orienteering app that provides GPS based punching and timing all through the app. These maps are available for use by the public at any time or day when downloaded to your smartphone. The app will show a map on your screen with an orienteering course marked on it. As you navigate around the track the GPS signal will record each control you visit.
The LSP are encouraging families and individuals within the County following all current Covid-19 guidelines to make use of these two Orienteering facilities in your area. When trying out the courses please follow all government guidelines for Covid-19. It is a great way to get out of the house and try a new sport.
