What is Parkrun?
Firstly it’s free :
Running in a parkrun event is totally free. You don’t pay to run, ever. And every event is organised by a group of local volunteers.
It’s for everyone: Whether you’re young or old, male or female, fit or unfit, able-bodied or not, you’re always welcome. It’s not about racing, it’s about running.
It’s forever: So long as there are fantastic volunteers and backers to make it happen, the event will always be free and everyone will always be welcome!
Parkrun Athlone:
In July 2015 Athlone Parkrun started on the grounds of Athlone IT. The route covers a mixture of trail paths and grass. This free weekly event is hosted by volunteers led by Alan O’Riada, . The HSE through their Get Ireland Active initiative have also supported this great initiative. The event provides both locals and visitors with a safe and fun environment for the perfect Saturday morning jog or walk. Facilities available to walkers & runners include Public Toilets in the indoor athletics arena, onsite campus cafe – for a post-activity refreshment, and car parking on the campus.
Events are timed each week with results uploaded to the Parkrun web site where the eager runners can track their runs and progress. All participants – both walkers and runners must register for the event onwww.parkrun.ie/athlone/
Registration is free and once registered, participants receive a unique barcode that enables them to take part at any of the global events without having to re-register.
Walkers and runners of all abilities are encouraged to register and take part in the event in order to have their run timed. Parkruns are run in a friendly non-competitive environment, there are no prizes and results are age graded.
