Westmeath County Council, working in association with Westmeath Sports Partnership Ltd., Mullingar Chamber of Commerce and supported by the many participating sports clubs and other sporting interests in Mullingar and backed by Failte Ireland and the Department of Transport Tourism & Sport, is delighted to announce the hosting of the third “Destination Sport Mullingar” – Festival of Sport, involving a week-long celebration of sport in Mullingar, between the 15th and 24th June 2012 and including National Bike Week 2012 Celebrations.
National Winner of the Sports Development Award at the Chambers Ireland, Excellence in Local Government Award 2011, “Destination Sport Mullingar” is once again gearing up the “Fun For All” Festival of Sport in 2012, to promote participation in sport, provide great spectator opportunities and promote Mullingar to maximum effect.
Sport is an activity which touches the lives of many people, providing opportunities to play sports, to join sports clubs, to attend sporting fixtures or to volunteer for sport-related activity and sport undoubtedly makes a significant contribution to the well being of our society in general. Mullingar has a rich sporting history and the town has produced many distinguished sports men & women. This Festival of Sport in Mullingar, offers an opportunity to show off the towns sporting talent and will hopefully encourage more people to become involved in sporting activity.
A host of activities & events will be on offer between the 15th and 24th June, including: the exciting National Criterium Cycle Race on the 15th June; the Fighting Cancer Triathlon on the 16th June; the “Streets on Fire” 5k Road Race on Friday 22nd June; Indoor Bowls Competitions on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd June; The “Sports Zone” and “Sport on the Royal Canal” events on Saturday 23rd June; and last but by no means least the inviting “Taste of Mullingar” on-street Food & and Crafts event with music and dance, tug-o-war, street football competitions, plus lots, lots more on Sunday 24th June.
A must-do, must-see event in the Mullingar Festivals Calendar and as “Destination Sport” Mullingar will offer a thoroughly wonderful Midlands experience for competitors, spectators, locals and visitors alike. So don’t miss it – Come and join the fun.
