Sportshall Athletics

Wednesday last saw the first of the Sportshall Athletics Primary Schools National Pre-Qualifying competitions take place in Athlone I.T. Counties Westmeath, Laois, Meath, Limerick, Offaly and Galway where all present on the day with four schools representing Westmeath, Dean Kelly, St Peters, Scoil Bhride (Rochfortbrigde) and Kilbeggan N.S.

Westmeath Sports Partnership has being working in conjunction with the Westmeath schools over the last few months in preparation for the regional qualifiers. Each school competed in both track and field events throughout the day, such as the javelin throw, relay running, long jump, speed bounce, chest punch and the standing triple long jump.

Third year students from the Community and Recreation course in A.I.T refereed with precision and accuracy, ensuring no faults were made by competing teams. Each team showed great skill throughout their games and upon completing each player received a medal as a reward for their hard work.

Unfortunately Westmeath didn’t qualify for the nationals but we wish to congratulate all schools which competed on the day.
